"It's really great fun," Phil Doughty tells me (main picture), who's on The Green waiting to race in this year's Soap Box Derby.
I ask about his kart, Rusty Nutz. "I built this about two years ago, and I've just been adding bits and bits to it.
"Last year, it stayed together, I didn't fall out, and we did the ramps. This year we've got the new rattler, bit dubious about that, I'm kind of expecting most of it to fall off - but it should keep rolling!"

There are all sorts of karts - everything from a bathtub, to book characters, to fizzy drinks.
Darren Hills has been racing since 2018, in his caravan creation (Hilly Racer). "I'm looking forward to it, we're definitely going to hit all the ramps - so whether the kart lasts...we hope it will!"
As well as the experienced, there are some amateurs too. It's Billy, from Leicester's, first Soap Box. "I'm excited and slightly scared. I'm feeling pretty confident, famous last words though eh?!"

It's windy - but the sun starts to shine - and the races (split into four age categories) begin. At the start the teams giving the karts the biggest push they can - as it's just gravity and design that helps build speed down the hilly terrain.
The crowd near to the chicane shouting, "Do the ramp! Do the ramp!" Some do, some don't - but those that do, get the biggest cheer.
The first ever Soap Box Derby in the town took place in 1953, for reasons unknown it stopped - but thankfully it was reintroduced in 2017.
