Golden celebrations as Hunstanton Rotary marks 50 years of service

Fifty years of friendship, fundraising and making a difference in the community were celebrated in style as Hunstanton and District Rotary marked its Golden Anniversary with a special gala dinner at Heacham Manor Hotel.

Golden celebrations as Hunstanton Rotary marks 50 years of service

The occasion brought together 78 members and invited guests for an evening of memories, music and celebration, recognising half a century of supporting good causes and helping people across the local area.

Rotary President Marie Jarvis welcomed everyone to the event, which began with a three-course dinner before guests enjoyed entertainment from Blue Satin Souls.

And while there was plenty to celebrate, the evening also provided another opportunity to raise money for a worthwhile local cause.

Raising money for local lifesavers

A special Golden Anniversary raffle, organised by Val and Jean with help from David, was followed by an auction conducted by Peter Atterbury.

Together, the two activities raised an impressive £555 for Hunstanton and Heacham Community First Responders, the President’s chosen charity for the year.

The volunteer responders provide an important service within the community, helping people facing medical emergencies while ambulance crews are on their way.

It was a fitting way for Rotary members to celebrate their anniversary, continuing the tradition of helping others that has been at the heart of the organisation for five decades.

A special honour for a dedicated member

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the prestigious Paul Harris Award to long-serving Rotarian Val Garner.

The award, named after Rotary’s founder, recognises outstanding commitment and service.

Fellow members described Val as a much-loved and dedicated Rotarian, with the honour warmly welcomed by those attending.

It was a particularly special moment during an evening devoted to recognising the people who have helped make Hunstanton and District Rotary what it is today.

Fifty years of memories

Another moving part of the celebrations came with the reading of a letter from founder member and former President Michael Thomas, who was unable to attend in person.

Michael looked back on the club’s beginnings and its development over the years, recalling some of the important moments that helped shape the organisation.

But it was his personal reflections on what Rotary had meant to him that made the greatest impression.

He described the organisation as having “given me an environment where character formed, values learned, ethics created and principles preserved, where I found comfort and solace in grief, pleasure and laughter in joy and encouragement and example in my daily living.”

He continued: “No man can experience these things without feeling of immense gratitude. May Hunstanton and District Rotary continue to flourish for at least another 50 years.”

His words were a reminder that Rotary is about much more than fundraising and community projects. For many members, it has also provided lasting friendships, encouragement and support through life’s happier and more difficult moments.

Looking forward to the next 50 years

The evening continued with music and dancing, as members and guests enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with friends and celebrate everything the club has achieved.

Over the past 50 years, Hunstanton and District Rotary has built its activities around the Rotary principles of fellowship and Service Above Self, bringing people together to support their community.

The Golden Anniversary dinner was both a celebration of that history and an opportunity to look towards the future.

With another £555 raised for a local charity, a special award presented and plenty of memories shared, it was certainly an occasion to remember.

And if the enthusiasm at Heacham Manor was anything to go by, Hunstanton and District Rotary has every intention of making the next 50 years just as worthwhile as the first.
