Rock Choir Raise £1,100 at Church Concert To Support Army Families

Rock Choir hits the right note with £1,100 raised for Armed Forces charity

There was plenty to sing about in Downham Market when around 50 Rock Choir members from King’s Lynn and Peterborough came together for a special concert, raising an impressive £1,100 for a charity supporting soldiers, veterans and their families.

Downham Market Methodist Church in Paradise Road was filled with music on Saturday 3 October as the singers performed for an enthusiastic audience of friends, family and supporters.

The concert was part of a series of events celebrating a 60th birthday, with proceeds going to the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF).

And with a programme featuring some well-loved pop classics, it wasn’t long before the audience was joining in.

A church filled with music

Rock Choir leader Sally Rose explained how the concert came about.

“Rev Paul Critchley approached Rock Choir and asked if we would put on a concert for the 60th birthday celebrations, raising money for the Army Benevolent Fund. It was part of a series of concerts.”

The choir performed two 50-minute sets, giving the audience plenty of opportunities to enjoy some familiar favourites.

Songs included Video Killed the Radio Star, Somewhere Only We Know, A Thousand Years and I’ll Be There For You.

And while the choir members may have been the official performers, the audience certainly played its part.

“The audience were absolutely brilliant and everyone joined in, they loved getting into the music,” said Sally.

£1,100 for a worthwhile cause

Thanks to ticket sales and refreshments sold during the concert, the event raised £1,100 for the Army Benevolent Fund.

The charity provides lifelong support to serving soldiers, veterans and their families, helping people through some of life’s most difficult challenges.

Its work includes assistance with bereavement, injuries, family difficulties, finding employment and care in later life.

For many former service personnel and their families, that support can make an enormous difference.

The money raised in Downham Market will help the charity continue providing assistance to those who need it.

Singing for the community

Charitable fundraising has become an important part of Rock Choir’s activities, with members regularly putting their voices to good use for local causes.

The King’s Lynn and Peterborough groups have a strong tradition of supporting organisations within their communities.

More recently, Rock Choir members took part in the Choir on the Green event in Hunstanton, helping to raise more than £1,600 for Hunstanton RNLI.

That money will support the lifeboat charity’s work keeping people safe along the Norfolk coast.

With 29 Rock Choir locations across the East of England, the organisation brings together people who share a love of singing, while giving them opportunities to make a difference beyond the rehearsal room.

A performance worth celebrating

For those who attended the Downham Market concert, it was an enjoyable occasion that combined familiar music, community spirit and support for a deserving charity.

And for the 50 singers who gave their time and voices, raising £1,100 was certainly something to celebrate.

It just goes to show what can happen when people come together for a good cause.

A little singing, a lot of enthusiasm and £1,100 raised. Now that’s what you call hitting the right note!
