The shelter, based at St John’s House in Blackfriars Road, provides vital support for people experiencing homelessness, offering somewhere safe to stay and the comfort of a proper meal.
But keeping that support going is not without its challenges.
The charity was forced to close during the summer because of a shortage of funding and, although it has now reopened, it is hoping to raise enough money to continue its work throughout 2027.
In the meantime, one of its most immediate needs is something many of us take for granted: food.
A hot meal can mean so much
Unlike most of us planning the weekly shop, the Night Shelter doesn’t have a food budget to fall back on.
Instead, it relies on the generosity of local people, businesses and community groups to help provide nutritious meals for its guests.
And those meals can make a real difference to someone who may have spent a long time without the comfort of regular, home-cooked food.
In an appeal to supporters, the shelter said:
“We’re also in need of a lot of help feeding our guests.
“We have no food budget at the Night Shelter and rely on donations to help us provide the good nutritious meals which make such a difference to people who may not have had the luxury of a hot meal every day for a long time.”
Could you add something to your shopping basket?
The shelter is encouraging individuals, families, workplaces, community organisations and local businesses to consider helping over the coming months.
And the good news is that making a difference doesn’t necessarily mean doing anything complicated.
A few extra items added to the weekly shop could help provide breakfast, lunch or an evening meal for someone who needs it.
Among the items currently being requested are:
- Long-life milk, instant coffee and hot chocolate
- Fresh fruit and vegetables
- Butter, cheese and eggs
- Peanut butter
- Tinned tuna and meat
- Breakfast cereals and sugar
- Biscuits
Whether it’s a carton of milk, a tin of food or a bag of fresh vegetables, every donation helps the team put meals on the table.
How to help
Food donations can be dropped off any day at King’s Lynn Night Shelter, St John’s House, Blackfriars Road, next to King’s Lynn railway station.
There is parking available for anyone bringing donations.
The shelter regularly updates its Facebook page with the items it needs most urgently, while a full list of suitable donations can be found on its website.

Looking towards 2027
While the immediate appeal is for food, the shelter is also working towards a bigger goal: securing enough funding to remain open throughout 2027.
Its summer closure highlighted just how difficult it can be for a small charity to maintain an essential service when funding is uncertain.
For those who rely on the shelter, having somewhere safe, warm and welcoming can make an enormous difference during difficult times.
And for the people who keep it running, knowing the community is behind them matters too.
Sometimes helping someone doesn’t require a grand gesture. It might simply mean picking up an extra packet of cereal, a few tins or something for the fridge.
For King’s Lynn Night Shelter, those small acts of kindness can add up to something rather important: a warm welcome and a good meal when they’re needed most.
