Broadband boost for more than 7,000 homes and businesses across West Norfolk

Thousands of homes and businesses across North West Norfolk could soon be enjoying faster and more reliable broadband after confirmation that more than 7,000 properties have been included in the latest government-backed rollout.

The announcement will be particularly welcome in rural communities, where getting a decent internet connection can still be something of a postcode lottery.

North West Norfolk MP James Wild has welcomed confirmation that approximately 7,120 premises in his constituency have been added to an agreement with Openreach under the government's Project Gigabit programme.

The scheme is designed to bring faster broadband to homes and businesses in areas where commercial providers are unlikely to build networks without additional support.

A welcome boost for rural communities

For many people, reliable broadband is no longer a luxury. From working at home and running a business to online shopping, banking and keeping in touch with family, a good internet connection has become an essential part of everyday life.

Yet some of our smaller villages and more isolated properties continue to face difficulties accessing the speeds available in larger towns.

Project Gigabit aims to address that gap by supporting the installation of gigabit-capable broadband infrastructure in harder-to-reach communities.

Gigabit-capable connections can offer download speeds of up to 1,000 megabits per second, although the speeds customers receive will depend on the package they choose.

More than 7,000 properties included

The confirmation came in a letter to James Wild from Ben Whitestone, Chief Executive of Building Digital UK, the government agency overseeing the programme.

He said: “I can confirm that of the total figure covering North West Norfolk, approximately 7,120 are in your constituency.”

The properties have been added to a cross-regional framework agreement with Openreach, which will deliver the new infrastructure.

Mr Wild said improving broadband access in rural communities had been one of his priorities.

“Ensuring access to the fastest networks is vital for people, communities, and businesses in rural areas and has been one of my priorities so I am delighted Building Digital UK has confirmed thousands of premises across North West Norfolk will now be connected through the latest Project Gigabit contract.”

He said he had spent the past three years raising concerns about communities that had missed out on previous broadband plans.

“Over the last three years, I have consistently been making the case for our communities after they were left out of earlier plans, meeting regularly with BDUK, pressing ministers, raising constituent cases, and making clear the importance of improving connectivity locally.”

When will the work begin?

Although the announcement is an important step forward, residents shouldn't expect engineers to arrive outside their homes immediately.

The detailed programme of work, including which communities will be connected first, will only be confirmed once surveys and planning have been completed.

The current expectation is that the additional connections will be delivered by 2029, meaning some households may still face a wait before the new services become available.

Being included in the rollout does not necessarily mean a property will automatically receive a new broadband package. Customers will still need to arrange a suitable service once the network becomes available.

Helping local businesses compete

For West Norfolk's rural businesses, improved broadband could make a considerable difference.

Whether it's a small business operating from a village workshop, a holiday accommodation provider, a farm or someone working from a home office, reliable connectivity is increasingly important.

Faster broadband can make everyday tasks easier, support online services and help businesses operate without the frustration of slow connections.

Mr Wild said: “While commercial networks provide access to many premises already, with more rollout planned, they will not cover harder to reach areas and I was determined that North West Norfolk should not miss out.”

He added: “This announcement means thousands more homes and businesses will gain access to the connectivity they need by 2029, helping to boost economic growth and improve everyday life across our area. I will continue to champion better digital infrastructure for North West Norfolk.”

Closing the digital divide

Project Gigabit was launched under the previous government and continues as part of the national effort to extend gigabit-capable broadband coverage.

The government has committed to making these faster networks available to 99 per cent of UK homes and businesses by 2032.

For North West Norfolk, the latest announcement represents a commitment to include thousands more properties that might otherwise have remained outside commercial broadband plans.

The next important step will be identifying exactly which villages, roads and individual properties are included, and when work is expected to take place.

For those still struggling with slow broadband, that information will be every bit as welcome as the announcement itself.

After all, whether you're running a business, working from home or simply trying to watch your favourite programme without the picture freezing, a reliable internet connection really shouldn't depend on which side of the village you live.
